Following in the family’s footsteps…

I am incredibly proud and excited to join the National Band, following in the footsteps of my Dad, Kevin, Uncles Mike and Graham, and my cousin Clynton. Both sides of the family have been involved in musical pursuits – and in banding in particular – as far back as anyone can remember, so it wasn’t surprising when my sister and I became interested in learning brass and piano as kids, working our way up into National Youth bands where I met my now husband, Dave (himself a national bandsman in 2005).

I remember clearly going to hear Dad and Clynt in the 1995 National Band before they headed off to the United States and being wowed by the level of playing on display. Add to that the many national band yarns and friendships that I grew up hearing about and I knew it was where I wanted to be some day.

Getting the call to join the band early this year felt amazing, although I was a bit daunted heading into my first rehearsal. All worries were quickly put to rest – the standard was (predictably) breath-taking, but everyone was so welcoming; just what I expected based on all those stories from years gone by. I can't wait to head away in May and make more fantastic music! It means an enormous amount to have joined this legendary group, contribute at the highest level, and fulfil a lifelong dream of becoming a national bandsman.
